Why coaching?

I got some amazing feedback from a client today – she said to me ‘your booklet is making me so inspired!‘ It made me realise how important coaching is and realising all that have inside so i thought i’d do a blog on why coaching is so great and what i can help you with specifically!

I am so happy to come from a generation in which self-care and self-help is prominent. It’s essential that no matter what comes up in our life that we are able to take a step back and examine where we are, where we’ve been and where we want to go. It’s essential that we look at our actions, our responsibilities and think – hang on, what can i do here to make this situation better for me?

There are however, times when we aren’t able to find the space to do that analysis. Times when life gets in the way and we end up feeling totally overwhelmed. This is when professionals come in. The professional help that you need may come in so many different forms – from psychotherapy, counselling, spiritual unblocking, energy work and coaching to name just a handful.

So what is coaching?

Coaching is a really powerful tool. It allows you to work with a professional and examine the life that you live in relation to the situation that has come up where perhaps you’ve felt you’ve lost a bit of direction; career, love, family, self etc. It is looking at your present and helping you to move towards set goals to achieve that very best self.

Coaching has YOU at the centre of it. It’s a way of using exercises, conversations and self-analysis in the safe space of working with someone experienced to uncover what it is that YOU want to do about that situation.

Coaching is not counselling. Coaching is a very ‘present’ experience. Yes you may look backwards in order to realise past behaviours, past actions and thoughts that may be clouding your actions/thoughts/behaviours now – but the point of coaching is working with tools, exercises and conversations to allow you to move past them to your present and future.

The other difference with coaching and counselling is goals. Counselling is very goal driven – where do you want to go? what’s holding you back? Let’s clear those blocks and get you to your goals. The advice and guidance led is based purely on what comes up in our session – but again, it is YOU focused. It is never the coach saying – i think this is best for you, this is what you should do. Instead we facilitate an environment where we fully understand YOU and take what YOU say to get you where you want to go.

Why is coaching important?

Coaching is important because we can sometimes in certain situations feel completely lost or stuck in a rut! We wake up and we find we aren’t sure where ‘you’ went, you have a shitty day at work and think – right i need a change, you’ve had a baby and you think – is my old job what i want? Can i even go back into the office now? All of these things and more are situations where coaching can be of great help.

According to the International Coach Federation…

Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole. Standing on this foundation, the coach’s responsibility is to:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve
  • Encourage client self-discovery
  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
  • Hold the client responsible and accountable

This process helps clients dramatically improve their outlook on work and life, while improving their leadership skills and unlocking their potential.

Your potential

That last sentence from the ICF is so important. I’m just going to spend a minute talking to you about your potential.

Potential – this is the accumilation of all of the skills, resources and intention that you have at your finger tips (realised or not!) and using it all to get you where you want to go. Every single person has the ability to change their present by acknowledging and harnessing their skills, resources and intentions.

What i think holds us back is that many of us do not see all of those things that make us up and so self-doubt creeps in and we think – we’re not enough. Whereas the reality is that we are plenty and we can do everything we wish in our life – if only we knew it.

What can Diosa Coaching help with?

At the core of what i do here is help you understand you skills, your values and belief systems. Why is this important? Because we are the accumilation of all of those things. By understanding everything that makes you up – you can stop that inner critic, that self-doubt by saying, well actually i can do what i want, i can be all that i wish to be because of all those things.

Identity is one of the key facets of what i help people with here at DC. When you understand yourself better you are filled with an un-ending dialogue of – yes i can, this is me, this is who i’m meant to be, i am all that i need.

Career is another facet that i help people with at DC. Whether you want to find a new job, whether you’re looking for your first job, to build up your role in your company or creating your own company i can help. How do i do this? Again, everything comes back to YOU. Your skills, values and belief systems. Once you understand who you are and what makes you tick – you can incorporate this understanding in the role that is right for you.

Working with mums is another area of work for me here. I work with mums to help them with identity (who are you now that you have a baby!), what skills do you have that you have harnessed pre-post baby that can help you in your job, going back to work or creating a business that allows you to work from home in and around your other responsibilities. It’s a different landscape for mums, which i appreciate and want to help you specifically.
